Lily at Dusk - September 30, 2011

     I made this quilt,  " Lily at Dusk"  ( 29"x 34" ) , and finished it in March of 2002.   It is featured in the book  "Quilting in the Morning Calm" by Shirley MacGregor and Sheila Steers on pages 30-31.  It traveled in a "traveling exhibit" to many venues and countries .   I was ask by Shirley MacGregor, a fiber artist, to participate and make a quilt from one of the paintings of Sim Saimdang, a famous Korean woman who lived in the early 16th century for this book.    Saimdang did paintings of flowers and insects on screens.
     I used cotton fabrics, iridescent fabric, ultra suede and beads on this quilt.  It is machine pieced and quilted.

      I live in northern Virginia and the firework display in Washington DC is spectacular on July 4th.   I beaded the fireworks on this fiber piece for an on-line haiku / fiber art challenge group.  It is 12 inches square in size.  The theme for September was "rhapsody".  My haiku for this fiber piece is:

Bombs bursting in air...
I see and hear the fireworks...
My heart beats quickly...

          I have been taking digital photos of the monarch butterflies that started their life cycle in my neighbor's yard recently.   First it was the monarch caterpillars,  then the chrysalis,  then the empty chrysalis  and now the monarch butterfly.  Unfortunately,  I don't think  this one is going to make it,  but it is beautiful all the same.

It is a photo transfer on to a treated white fabric of a photo that I took from the airplane.   I used angelina  fiber  for the shining "misty" look.   It is machine quilted.

    When I walked around in my front yard after the days of rain here in northern Virginia,  I saw this bright red and yellow leaf laying under my front maple trees.   There were only about  four or five  leaves that had turned colors and had fallen.  Otherwise,  all the other leaves on the tree are still  bright green.

        This is a digital photo of my "Nighttime Garden"  fiber piece for a challenge group that I participate in.  This group challenge just started so I have one finished and fifty one more to go.  We have to make a fiber  piece each week by the Sunday deadline.  This is the quilt that I made for the Sept. 4th deadline.  It is  bargello pieced and has clusters of beads/crystals to represent a garden glistening in the moonlight.  It measures 10 1/2" x 12 1/2" in size.

    I went to the Smithsonian Museum of American History to see the September 11: Remembrance and Reflection exhibit that is only at the museum from Sept. 3 - 11 , 2011.     They had artifacts from all three sites.   You can read more about it at:    smithchan.com/sept11
They had table displays from New York, Pennsylvania, the Pentagon and the Transportation Security Administration.

    I just took this photo of one of the monarch caterpillar chrysalis, hanging on a rose bush in my neighbor's yard.  They were eating their milk weed leaves and are now going into the chrysalis stage.    I can't wait for them to come out as monarch butterflies and fly away.  I'm hoping to get a photo of that too.
